On the search for help sleeping many people who suffer from sleeplessness come across Melatonin. So what the heck is Melatonin? melatonin is a natural hormone that is produced in the pineal glad when the sun sets. Melatonin helps to induce sleep naturally. Synthetic man made Melatonin is the only hormone available over the counter in the United States. Melatonin works by relaxing the body and there for inducing sleep. Melatonin is used by people who work the midnight shift or who suffer from jet lag. Daylight can inhibit the production of Melatonin in the body, so a Melatonin supplement is taken to help with sleep.

Children produce more Melatonin and that’s why younger children “sleep like a baby”. As we grow older natural Melatonin production decreases causing problems with falling asleep and staying asleep. There are a variety of Melatonin supplements available to give your body more Melatonin, helping to promote sleep.

Melatonin is considered a safe aid for sleep when taken in the proper dosage. Exactly what the proper dosage is, varies from person to person. Before you start to take a Melatonin supplement for sleep you will want to consult your physician. While generally considered safe, any supplement you take should only begin after you have received advice from your doctor.

When starting to take Melatonin for sleep the rule of thumb is to start with a low dose and then working up to higher dosages until you find the right amount for you. This can take a little bit of experimentation to find the right dosage to give you a deep restful sleep. Taking too much Melatonin can result in a restless sleep and vivid dreams, so be sure to err on the side of caution when finding the right dosage. It is generally thought that starting at  1mg with a maximum dose of 2mg – 3mg being effective for most people.

As far as natural sleep aids are concerned, Melatonin is one of the most effective and safe aids for inducing sleep that is deep and natural. With little of side effects found in other over the counter or prescription sleep medications, a Melatonin supplement is worth a look for those that travel often, work off hours, suffer from occasional sleeplessness and transient insomnia.
