CPAP Machine Reviews

Research has it that over 100 million people suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) globally. In the States alone, a whopping 22 million people suffer from this disorder.

As a commonly known sleep disorder, obstructive sleep apnea makes it hard for a person to breathe while sleeping. A person suffering from it may either have their breathing restricted or completely blocked making it hard for them to have a peaceful night sleep as well as other health problems.

Most cases of sleep apnea are caused by lifestyle habits like drinking, smoking, substance abuse and irregular sleeping habits. However, it is estimated that 80 percent of sleep apnea cases are undiagnosed. As such, OSA patients would benefit a lot by going for a screening, getting diagnosed and starting treatment.

One of the most effective and validated approaches for treating obstructive sleep apnea from has been with the use of CPAP – an acronym for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure – which puts enough amount of pressure into the airway allowing one to breathe effortlessly as they sleep.

Choosing the right CPAP machine can be a daunting task considering the market is saturated with different products and the internet is flooded with all types of CPAP machine reviews for your consumption. However, there are key factors to consider when choosing a CPAP machine.

This is what our review is about. You will get to know what you need to look for as well as the best CPAP machines available in the market today.

What is it?

A CPAP machine as mentioned, is a device that’s used in treating patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. The machine works by increasing the air pressure in your throat by preventing your airway from collapsing when you breathe.

Different users have varied views when it comes to the use of their own CPAP machines and how well it adapts to their body systems. The use of CPAP machines as a form of sleep apnea treatment is usually prescribed by a medical professional after a diagnosis.

In the past few years, companies manufacturing CPAP machines have upped their game and invented new models that make it easier for users to use without experiencing side effects such as condensation, dry throat and other discomforts.

If you want to purchase a new CPAP machine, you will be more than happy to make a choice if you’ve considered all the options you have regardless of whether you are a veteran or a first-time user who has just been diagnosed with OSA.

You will want to compare all the innovations that make various products stand out before spending your hard-earned money.

However, before making a purchase, you need to determine the sleep apnea treatment you are using. While they are mostly known as CPAP, therapy for sleep apnea cuts across all types of Positive Airway Pressure (PAP). There are three major types of PAP systems:

  • CPAP

  • Known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, these systems administer pressure continuously at a consistent rate and are used for the treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea.

  • BiPAP

  • Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure – also known as BPAP – gives two forms of pressurized air: one to match how you inhale and the other how you exhale. BPAP is mainly used for moderate to acute sleep apnea.

  • APAP

  • Also known as AutoPAP – Automatic Positive Airway Pressure – administers a preset scope of air pressure to help in a range of breathing patterns. Most people who get the APAP prescription have mild to moderate sleep apnea.

It’s important to know the kind of delivery system that you need when out shopping for any CPAP machines as all features aren’t the same and may not work for you.

What to Consider When Buying CPAP Machines

If you’re out shopping for a device that’s meant to make you comfortable when you sleep, then it’s essential that you know what to look out for when buying a CPAP machine. Besides our list of the best CPAP machine reviews has the below factors accounted for.

  • Manufacturer’s Reputation

  • Now, while there are many manufacturers of CPAP machines, how well do you know the one whose device you want to buy?

Before I bought my own CPAP machine – even after reading more than 50 CPAP machine reviews online – I had to ensure that the manufacturer I was buying the product from had a reputation for manufacturing quality products and was trustworthy.

And as you can guess, mine was from Philips Respironics, one of the globally recognized manufacturers of quality CPAP machines. Besides, Philips Respironics, ResMed and APEX Medical are other manufacturers that rank high when it comes to the production of quality CPAP machines.

This is because they have been on the market for decades and have specialized and perfected their art of producing quality CPAP machines that are not only the best in the market but are effective as well.

My advice always when it comes to purchasing a CPAP machine: it’s better to spend more on a quality device than spend less and get an ineffective device. Hence, the manufacturer of the product is as important as the purpose the product is going to serve.

  • Portability

  • If you love traveling like I do, then getting a CPAP machine that’s printable and can be packed very easily when traveling is a must. Remember, traveling here doesn’t just mean visiting another country. Even visiting your friends or family that leave 100 miles away and where you’ll need to spend two or three days away from the comfort of your home gets a pass.

Hence, when it comes to portability, you need to consider the size of the CPAP machine that you want to get. While most manufacturers have designed their devices to enable ease of transportation, even those that aren’t can still be easy to pack and move around with.

When it comes to weight, a light machine is a darling to many as it’s easy to pack and move around with regardless of the length of your trip. Additionally, buying a machine that has a carrying case comes in handy since you won’t have to stress about where to pack it when you need to travel.

  • Comfortable Mask/Ease of Cleaning and Maintenance

  • One of the things I hold dear is that you shouldn’t spend money on a CPAP machine that has an uncomfortable mask and is too complex to clean and maintain.

While I haven’t experienced any discomforts from my CPAP machine, some users complain about scarred faces and discomfort brought about by the use of their CPAP mask. So yes, not all CPAP machines have good masks, and while you can buy another one, it will require you to spend more money that you can avoid in the first place if only you invest in one of the best CPAP machines.

All CPAP machines come into direct contact with our skin on our face area. That means it’s important that you are able to clean it easily especially since you will always need to touch it to attach it. And while most machines have been designed for ease of cleaning, some aren’t.

When shopping around for one, ensure that you are able to easily remove the different parts and clean stress-free. Also, make sure that the filters can be replaced without you sweating.

  • Data Recording and Storage Ability

  • Investing in a CPAP machine that has the capacity to record and store your sleep history while you sleep is the best thing that you could do for yourself. And not just a day’s or week’s data but more of a year’s worth of data.

    Why? You ask.

CPAP is mainly used a therapy and having a machine that can store all this data comes in handy for your doctor or therapist as it helps them understand your sleep pattern as well as areas for improvement. The data can also be an indicator for them if any issues arise.

This way, they know how best to address an issue before it escalates or spirals out of control causing more health problems.

  • Breathing Technologies

  • Another factor that’s really important to consider when buying a CPAP machine and that shouldn’t miss on CPAP machine reviews online is the breathing technology of these machines.

Your machine should have a ramp function that basically increases the machine’s pressure gradually as you fall asleep. It should also automatically adjust the pressure when you are asleep. This way, you don’t have to constantly wake up in the middle of the night to adjust the pressure yourself.

Additionally, if you want to hit the jackpot, get a CPAP machine that has climate control. What does this mean? A climate control feature on your machine makes its output adaptable to the different climatic or environmental changes.

This is important if you travel a lot by air and need to use your CPAP machine midflight. Also, it’s essential for those who live in high altitude areas as it’ll help keep the inhaled air temperature invariable regardless of any weather change.

    Our Review

When you have to make a choice for one device out of hundreds of products that are similar, you can get a bit nervous and anxious about whether you are making the right choice. And I know this. I totally get you as I was like you when I needed to buy my own CPAP machine.

That’s why I don’t need you going through the same confusion. Here is my review of the best CPAP machine reviews that you should be thinking of getting when shopping for one.

    1. DreamStation Auto

The DreamStation Auto is one of the more recent CPAP machines manufactured by Philips. It is an incredibly sleek, compact and stylish CPAP machine that comes with user-friendly controls.

It is one of the machines that Philips has designed with feedback from hundreds of sleep apnea patients and is aimed at giving the best CPAP experience. I, for a fact, fell in love with this machine and bought it and my experience has so far been great.

With lots of innovation in place on this machine that’s evident, Philips clearly were trying to outdo themselves.

It has an EZ-Start technology for first-time CPAP users that helps them slowly get used to their prescribed therapy level by delivering personalized adjustments that are automated for the first 30 days of use. This allows patients to easily get comfortable with how the machine works as well as adapt to their therapy.

The standard ramp system has been designed to deliver low pressure when you start breathing into the mask so as to ease you into sleep. Once you’ve fallen asleep, the machine begins to boost the airflow to the recommended pressure.

Another amazing feature that I definitely love because I have a sensitive airway is the SmartRamp feature. With this, I don’t have to worry about high-pressure changes when I fall asleep as this feature works by increasing pressure more gently. It also has a Flex Comfort feature that’s designed to lower the pressure allowing you to exhale easily against the pressure the machine delivers.

Moreover, one feature helped me decide this is what I needed: the 30-day maintenance alerts. Since Philips know that we are humans and we can forget stuff, they solved that issue by adding a reminder and alerts system every 30 days.

It has a DreamMapper App that you can download and use to track your progress. You can do this by syncing the machine with your smartphone, computer or tablet. It also has wireless Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity allowing you to easily transfer data.

While it has plenty of technological innovations, this machine is very user-friendly and makes it easy for patients to stick to their therapy routine.

    2. AirSense 10 Autoset

If you desire a machine that’s centered on smart breathing technology, then you can’t go wrong ResMed’s AirSense 10 Autoset. This is a machine that is able to note your breathing pattern overtime and automatically adjust it accordingly via its Auto-Set Feature.

If you snore or suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, it’s able to monitor each breath you inhale and exhale and deliver just the right amount of pressure when it detects hindrance to your air flow. This way, you will always a peaceful sleep as your sleep won’t be interrupted.

Like other top made products such as the Dreamstation by Philips, the AirSense 10 also has an Auto-Ramp feature that helps to gradually increase the right amount of pressure as you fall asleep. This is one of the features I liked most about the AirSense 10. It also prides itself in having an Auto-Response feature that gently heightens the ramp increment for users who need their machines to start at low-level pressure.

The Expiratory Pressure Relied (EPR) technology helps in the lowering of the flow of your air pressure when you exhale. In addition, the AirView software helps you monitor the progress of your therapy and gives you a nightly data. This data can then be used by your therapist or doctor in monitoring your progress.

Besides, the minute you press the start button on the machine and breathe into your mask, the SmartStart feature automatically beings therapy. As such, you have nothing to worry about.

It also has a light sensor that adjusts to your room’s brightness and a humidifier that prevents you from having a dry airway and throat while at the same time keeping you comfortable as you use it.

    3. DreamStation Pro CPAP

Similar to the DreamStation Auto CPAP machine, the DreamStation Pro also has the same set of CPAP technology from Philips. From automatic temperature adjustments that come with the optional humidifier to Bluetooth connectivity, this device has refined features from past models.

It’s highly effective, sleek and user-friendly just like the DreamStation Auto machine. The DreamStation models are one of Philips’ most advanced machines designed for sleep apnea patients.

Unlike its predecessors, this machine is light in weight making them very attractive especially if you love traveling or are always on the road due to work or family commitments. In terms of combination, this machine delivers on features, performance, and size as well.

It also has the DreamMapper App that you can sync with your phone to get your nightly data and progress of your therapy. Its data and statistics reporting is way more advanced than that of any other CPAP machine – of course, with the exception of its sister the DreamStation Auto – available in the market.

Although its Heated Humidifier is purchased separately, it allows you to control the temperature settings on your machine. It also monitors the humidity of your environment and adjusts the water temperature as needed. The humidifier shares the same power supply as that of your machine and will save you the stress of adding another socket in your room.

It also has alerts and reminders that enable you to change your filters every 30-days.

    4. SleepCube AutoAdjust Plus Auto-CPAP

SleepCube AutoAdjust has been one of the well-known brands in the market with customer reviews showing their love for the device. This particular model by DeVilbiss has been modified further with an added exhalation relief system that uses the SmartFlex technology.

The SmartFlex system makes it easier for your to easily breathe out in a more comfortable and natural way. This is quite crucial for sleep apnea patients as they are able to sleep comfortably throughout the night. Besides, it’s one of the greatest additions to the SleepCube model.

This is due to the fact that the SmartFlex can be customized to suit your desired need. Depending on the amount of pressure relief or sharpness that you desire when inhaling and exhaling.

Its small size makes it suitable for any size of the room without one needing more space for storing it. Moreover, it has data recording capabilities which can easily be accessed. All the data can be displayed on the SmartCode display system. Hence there’ll be no need to buy a memory card for all your data.

While the package doesn’t come with a humidifier – has to be bought separately – its humidifier has been intelligently designed to sit comfortably on top of the humidifier saving you space. In addition to it sitting on top, another advantage is that your air inlet doesn’t gather dust. The humidifier can also be washed easily in a dishwasher making it easy to clean.

Best part is that it comes with a 3-year warranty giving you peace of mind that you are investing in a worthy device.

    5. System One REMstar 60 Pro CPAP Machine

I have mentioned enough times that Philips is one of the top brands when it comes to CPAP machines and other medical devices. The System One REMstar is one of their signature designs as well that has been built on the M-Series success.

This CPAP machine has a control system that is more intuitive, an advanced technological package that makes it a must have as well as improved usability. It also has its sister the REMstar 60 Auto CPAP machine with the only difference being the fact that it is auto.

The C-Flex+ feature makes it quite natural and easy to exhale. Every mask by Philips has a number that once keyed in into the REMstar, generates the right amount of pressure that’s resistant to what the mask itself delivers. This means that you have the exact amount of pressure needed regardless of the mask that you choose to wear. The feature continuously eases the pressure when you exhale while at the same softening the pressure while you inhale.

The fact that it has a separate humidifier -bought separately as well – means that you are only able to use it when you need it, unlike other CPAP machines that have the humidifier attached making it hard to remove it when you don’t need it. Besides, its humidifier takes the humidity of your room into account through the sensors found in and out of the machine.

Another great feature that made this a must pick for me in this review is that it is light in weight and has a carry bag which makes it really attractive especially for those who love traveling.

    Pros

    • check
Lightweight and carry bag make sit portable
    • check
Designed for superior performance and is reliable
    • check

    Cons

    • check
If one needs a humidifier, it’ll cost more to get it as it isn’t part of the package

    Conclusion

It’s important for human beings to get eight hours of sleep in a day. While sleep apnea can be a threat to this, there are solutions available in the market for their treatment such as the CPAP therapy.

For me, my choice of a good CPAP machine is the DreamStation Auto. Having used it for several months now, I can guarantee you that it’s worth every coin you spend. If you don’t trust me at least trust the reputation that Philips has in the medical industry.

I sure hope that by now you know what device to consider whether you have just recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea or are a veteran. Happy shopping.
